Partitioning Friends Fairly

چکیده

We consider the problem of partitioning n agents in an undirected social network into k almost equal size (differing by at most one) groups, where utility agent for a group is number her neighbors group. The core and envy-freeness are two compelling axiomatic fairness guarantees such settings. former demands that there be no coalition each has more than own group, while latter envy another they in. provide (often tight) approximations to both guarantees, many our positive results obtained via efficient algorithms.

How to Divide Things Fairly

We analyze a simple sequential algorithm (SA) for allocating indivisible items that are strictly ranked by n ≥ 2 players. It yields at least one Pareto-optimal allocation which, when n = 2, is envy-free unless no envy-free allocation exists. However, an SA allocation may not be maximin or Borda maximin—maximize the minimum rank, or the Borda score, of the items received by a player. Although SA...

Dividing Connected Chores Fairly

In this paper we consider the fair division of chores (tasks that need to be performed by agents, with negative utility for them), and study the loss in social welfare due to fairness. Previous work has been done on this so-called price of fairness, concerning fair division of cakes and chores with non-connected pieces and of cakes with connected pieces. We provide tight or nearly tight bounds ...

How to mark fairly

A network router that marks packets to signal congestion should do so fairly. We propose a deenition of fairness, using ideas from eeective band-width theory and economics. Our deenition measures both the level of congestion at a router and the contribution of each ow to that congestion, taking into account the ow's burstiness. We then use large deviations to analyse marking algorithms such as ...

On Dealing with Adversaries Fairly

Peer-to-peer systems are often vulnerable to disruption by minorities. There are several strategies for dealing with this problem, but ultimately many of them come down to some kind of voting or collaborative filtering mechanism. Yet there exists a large literature on voting theory, also known as social choice theory. In this note we outline some of its key results and try to apply them to a nu...

Share the Multicast Payment Fairly

Multicast routing uses a structure, either a tree or a mesh, to connect the receivers to the source, thus saving the bandwidth. How to share the cost among the receivers in a certain fair way has been studied widely in literature. When the agents, either the links or the nodes, in the network are selfish, it is desirable to pay the agents in a proper way such that each agent still reveals its t...
